India's UPI Crosses 20 Billion Monthly Transactions — World's Largest Real-Time Payments Network

India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has crossed the landmark of 20 billion transactions in a single month for the first time, processing a total value of ₹23 lakh crore ($280 billion) in April 2026.

Growth Drivers

The continued surge in UPI adoption is being driven by several factors including the expansion of UPI-enabled credit lines, the rollout of UPI for feature phones through UPI123Pay, and the increasing popularity of UPI for international transactions.

International Expansion

NPCI International has been aggressively expanding UPI's global footprint, with the payment system now accepted in 15 countries.

PhonePe and Google Pay Dominate

PhonePe continues to lead the market with approximately 47% market share, followed by Google Pay at 37% and Paytm at 8%.
